Nexus support

Nexus documentation support

A nexus is the connection between a current condition and your military service. We help you understand when that connection needs clearer medical support, and what nexus-related documentation is meant to show.

A claim can be denied when the connection is not clearly supported, even when the underlying situation is real. Understanding what the VA looks for can make the next step much clearer.

Who this is for

For Veterans whose connection to service was not clear

This support is for you if the VA said your condition was not connected to your service, or you are not sure how to show that it is.

Some connections are obvious on paper. Others, like a condition that started years after discharge or one caused by another service-connected condition, need clearer support.

  • Your claim was denied because it was not service connected
  • Your condition began or got worse after you left the service
  • Your condition may be caused or worsened by another service-connected condition
  • You were exposed to something in service and want to understand the link
  • You are not sure what a nexus letter or opinion is

What we help with

What we help you understand about the connection to service

We help you understand what nexus-related documentation is meant to establish and why it matters.

What a nexus is

It is the link between your condition and your service.

The VA generally looks for a current diagnosis, an event, injury or exposure in service, and evidence connecting the two.

Medical opinions

A medical opinion can explain the connection when the records alone do not.

VA examiners, and sometimes private providers, give opinions on whether a condition is at least as likely as not related to service. We help you understand what those opinions are meant to address.

Secondary conditions

A condition caused or worsened by a service-connected condition can be claimed too.

For example, a condition that developed because of another one you are already rated for. We help you understand how that kind of connection is supported.

Why denials happen

Many service-connection denials come down to a missing or unclear link.

We help you understand what the decision says about the connection, and what may have been missing from the evidence.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is nexus-related documentation?

It is the evidence that supports the connection between a current condition and your military service.

We help you understand what that documentation is meant to establish and why a claim may be denied when the connection is not clearly supported, even in cases where the underlying situation is real.

Do I need a nexus letter?

Not always. Some claims are supported by the records alone, while others need a medical opinion to explain the connection.

We help you understand whether your situation may need clearer medical support.

Can a condition that started after service still be connected?

It can, depending on the evidence. Some conditions appear or worsen years later, and some are secondary to a service-connected condition.

We help you understand what kind of evidence may support that connection.

Do you guarantee a rating or approval?

No. We do not guarantee a rating, a claim approval or any particular outcome.

The VA makes every decision on your claim. What we do is help you understand what your claim may need, what can be strengthened and what your next step could look like.

Can Love4Vets file my VA claim for me?

No. We do not file claims on your behalf.

Love4Vets provides VA claim coaching and support. We help you understand your claim situation, your evidence and your possible next steps.
